The Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine (IMM) and the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery form the Musculoskeletal University Center Munich (MUM), which is part of the Hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU Klinikum). The Institute is based in Martinsried, nearby the Hospital campus and close to the Biomedical Center (BMC), the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry, many biotech start-up- and other life science-oriented companies. Our laboratory is located in a research building alongside with other laboratories of the MUM as well as research groups from other Departments and Institutes of the University Hospital.

Our scientific focus is on molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating bone remodeling in health and disease. We investigate diseases like osteoporosis and breast cancer bone metastases. In addition to examining the skeleton, we also investigate molecular and metabolic mechanisms leading to muscle weakness. Besides reaching a better understanding of the pathological conditions, we aim to identify novel pharmacological treatment modalities.
