Volker Vielhauer is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the LMU Klinikum of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Rheumatology. He serves as a Consultant Nephrologist at the LMU Klinikum and runs outpatient clinics in Nephrology and Rheumatology, with a special interest in inflammatory rheumatic diseases with renal co-morbidity. He conducts clinical research as a Principal Investigator in interventional multicentre trials on IgA nephropathy, vasculitis, and diabetic chronic kidney disease. Additional clinical interests focus on progression of chronic kidney disease and its complications like secondary hyperparathyroidism. Dr. Vielhauer`s translational research group in the Division of Nephrology works on immune mechanisms of acute and chronic renal injury, with special interests in the role of chemokines and the TNF system in renal inflammation and progression of injury. The function of inflammatory mediators and particularly endogenous inhibitors of inflammation are investigated in cell culture systems and various murine models of renal diseases.

Biography
Volker Vielhauer received his undergraduate medical training in Munich (Technische Universität and Ludwig-Maximilians-University), at the University of Birmingham (UK) and the National Institute of Neurology, London, and qualified as an MD in 1996. He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowships in Nephrology and later Rheumatology at the LMU Klinikum, becoming board-certified in these specialties. Since 2007 he serves as Consultant Nephrologist at the LMU Klinikum.
Dr. Vielhauer earned his doctoral degree at the Institute of Pathology of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in 2000. Subsequently, he pursued a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Center of Excellence in Vascular Biology at Brigham and Women`s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, from 2002 to 2004. After having returned to the LMU Klinikum Dr. Vielhauer became a translational research group leader in the Nephrology Division, received his Habilitation in 2006 and subsequently progressed to Associate Professor. He is a Senior Lecturer in Nephrology and Rheumatology, and coordinates all undergraduate Nephrology teaching at the LMU Klinikum.
