The Hospital of the University of Munich, Germany, is one of the largest and most competitive university hospitals in Germany and Europe. 48 specialized hospitals, departments and institutions harbouring excellent research and education provide patient care at the highest medical level with around 11.000 employees.

Scope of duties

Our group has identified immunothrombosis - the interplay of platelets, the coagulation cascade and the innate immune system as a crucial mechanism in host defense as well as infectious and thrombotic disease. We have highlighted that particularly the interplay between platelets and neutrophils is central to immunothrombosis. Beyond its protective effects, this interplay can cause severe hyperinflammation, for example in COVID-19. We have utilized novel Omics approaches to further understand the mechanisms behind these diseases, ranging from shot-gun proteomics to bulk and single cell RNA (scRNA) sequencing (compare Pekayvaz et al, Nature Communications, 2022, and Kaiser et al, JCI Insight, 2021). We now strive to further our understanding of platelet-neutrophil interplay in atherosclerosis and acute inflammatory disease. For this, we strive to combine advanced mouse models and patient samples with RNA sequencing approaches, including CITE-sequencing. The pipeline for cell isolation from murine tissues as well as human samples is established in our lab. The PhD student will combine wet lab work – mouse models of atherosclerosis, cell isolation – with bioinformatics work analyzing and integrating datasets to define new axes in platelet leukocyte interplay in infection and inflammation.

Our requirements

The ideal candidates should have expertise in bioinformatics with additional interest in wet lab work. You should be highly motivated and team-oriented with interest in immunology and cardiovascular disease. Solid English skills written and spoken are mandatory. The successful candidate for the PhD position should have successfully concluded a master in life sciences or bioinformatics. Mandatory vaccination in healthcare: Since 16.03.2022, all employees in hospitals will be subject to mandatory vaccination against SARS-CoV-2).

Our offer

You will work in an international group of experienced staff (Postdocs and PhD students from different fields like veterinarians, physicians and biologists, as well as technical assistants) with an excellent infrastructure and a strong focus on translational research at Campus Großhadern. We have a strong cooperation with the Prof. Zimmer at the Bioinformatics department. The salary will be according to TV-L. In addition, we will offer workshops (scientific and soft skills) and seminars within the research field and the opportunity to attend and present at international conferences. The University of Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University welcomes and encourages interest from handicapped candidates. Unfortunately, application costs will not be compensated.
