The Hospital of the University of Munich, Germany, is one of the largest and most competitive university hospitals in Germany and Europe. 48 specialized hospitals, departments and institutions harbouring excellent research and education provide patient care at the highest medical level with around 11.000 employees.

Scope of duties

PROMISE is an Advanced Clinician Scientist Program for Comprehensive Neuroscience funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR). The program supports outstanding board-certified physicians in the field of neuroscience and related clinical disciplines, such as cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, or (neuro-)radiology, who wish to pursue independent research alongside their clinical duties at the LMU University Hospital in Munich. PROMISE offers a 50:50 split of clinical duties and protected research time. This is combined with full scientific independence and access to an exceptional research ecosystem, including the Munich Excellence Cluster for Systems Neurology (SyNergy) and related collaborative research centres (CRCs). PROMISE fellows are appointed as group leaders and receive dedicated laboratory and office space, full autonomy in research strategy and team leadership, the possibility to recruit and supervise staff, and visibility as an independent principal investigator. PROMISE fellows will benefit from strategic support measures and an individualized qualification program to prepare for the next career stage. An individually assigned team of mentors will support the fellows in achieving their defined goals.

Our requirements

  • Board-certified physician or all formal prerequisites for registration for the board certification exam

  • Strong motivation to pursue a long-term career as a clinician scientist
  • Outstanding scientific track record with a clear independent research profile in a neuroscience-related field
  • Successful acquisition of third-party funding
  • Commitment to Open Science, research transparency and good scientific practice
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills and willingness to take on leadership and management responsibilities

Our offer

  • The position offers a 50% contractually protected research time and 50% clinical work.

  • Each Advanced Clinician Scientist will receive funding for a six-year period.

  • Substantial financial support is provided, approximately €135,000 per year, including the research component of the fellow’s position.

  • Fellows will benefit from an excellent scientific environment with multiple opportunities for collaboration and access to cutting-edge infrastructure.

  • A structured clinical-scientific qualification program is offered, along with cross-mentoring, peer mentoring, and individual coaching.

  • Comprehensive support for career development is provided, and fellows will have regular exchange with other clinician scientists funded by the BMBF and the LMU Medical & Clinician Scientist Program (MCSP) to expand their professional network.

  • Female physicians are expressly encouraged to apply. External and LMU-internal applicants are explicitly welcomed.

  • Remuneration is based on the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector of the Länder (TV-L) including all allowances customary in the public sector.

The application deadline is 15.05.2026, for funding to begin no later than 01.02.2027.
