Clinical Management of Tropical Diseases

An approach based course to develop practical knowledge and skills
PD Dr. med. Andreas Wieser

The Clinical Management of Tropical Diseases course focuses on applied differential diagnosis and case management of major diseases in resource poor settings, i.e. on syndromes rather than on the pathogenesis of specific diseases. Realistic management approaches will be discussed taking into account locally varying requirements and resources.

The compact 2 week course covers all major infectious diseases in resource poor settings, including so called neglected tropical diseases. Using a participatory learning approach (e.g. interactive sessions, case studies, group exercises), differential diagnoses, e.g. of fever, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, skin lesions and neurological presentations are discussed. The course also includes practical exercises, e.g. on Ebola outbreak management and on the use of ultrasound for differential diagnosis.

Successful participation is assessed with a one hour multiple choice/short answer exam that covers the theoretical aspects of the course.

All lecturers on this course are experts in their fields and have extensive clinical experience in resource-poor countries. The course thrives on the diverse experiences of the predominantly international students and lecturers and enables intensive exchange, including through presentations by students during the lunch break and at evening events.

Attendance on site during the course is recommended, but online participation is also possible.

We look forward to seeing you in the course!
