ITU/WHO/WIPO Global Initiative on Artificial Intelligence for Health, Topic Group Oral Health
The ITU/WHO/WIPO Topic Group Oral Health (TG-OH), formerly Dental Diagnostics and Digital Dentistry (TG-Dental), is part of the Global Initiative on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Health launched by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This initiative aims to improve healthcare worldwide using AI and promotes the exchange of knowledge and the development of technical standards for the use of AI in the healthcare sector.
Goals and vision
The objectives of TG-OH are to develop and implement AI-driven strategies for the prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of oral diseases, while promoting knowledge sharing and workforce training. Its mission is to create generalizable tools, benchmark datasets, and evidence-based methodologies to support the safe and equitable integration of AI into oral health systems at national and international levels. The group focuses on:
- Development of global standards for AI in oral health: While general frameworks for AI in medicine already exist, TG-OH aims to adapt them to the specific needs of oral health and promote the responsible use of AI in the field. This includes ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations, as well as guidance for reporting AI research.
- Evaluation of AI models and applications: TG-OH aims to establish strategies for benchmarking AI models and applications in oral health. This includes regional data collection and annotation to improve the generalizability, robustness, and fairness of AI-based tools
- Clinical implementation of AI tools: Although AI research in oral health is expanding rapidly, clinical integration remains limited. TG-OH aims to identify barriers to implementation and support the evaluation of the real-world clinical impact of AI tools.
- Knowledge sharing and global collaboration: TG-OH promotes digital and AI literacy by supporting the training of oral health professionals and the integration of AI into dental curricula worldwide. The group also fosters international collaboration, including active engagement with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Publications
TG-OH has already published numerous papers concerning the applications of AI in oral health. These publications provide detailed insights into the state of the art, technical solutions and regulatory requirements for AI in dental practice. A list of the group's publications can be found here.
Members and global networking
TG-OH is proud of its global and diverse membership base. In total, the group comprises over 140 clinicians and researchers from all over the world. Our members are represented on all 6 continents, with the majority from Europe and Asia. The interdisciplinary collaboration enables innovative approaches to the challenges of oral health to be developed and implemented.
How to join
Participation in TG-OH is open to dental professionals, AI researchers and other interested parties who wish to get involved in the advancement of oral health. Anyone interested can contact us via the deputy (Antonin.Tichy@med.uni-muenchen.de) with the chair (Falk.Schwendicke@med.uni-muenchen.de) in CC.
