2022 Future of Food Symposium

We have successfully held the first Future of Food Symposium Munich on 07 May 2022. To create a plattform for international exchange, the symposium was held fully online. A variety of speakers elaborated on the overarching topic of this year`s event: "Transforming Food Systems"

Food systems encompass all the interrelated actors and their interlinked activities involved in the production, processing, distribution, consumption and disposal of food. Around the world, current food systems face various challenges, such as ensuring food security, nutritionally feeding a growing population and supporting the livelihoods of farmers and all actors in the food chain. The call for economically, socially and environmentally sustainable food systems has become increasingly loud in recent years. Especially since 2015, when the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) called for profound transformations in agriculture and food systems to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition by 2030. To achieve the SDGs, the current global food system must be transformed to be more productive, more inclusive of poor and marginalized populations, environmentally sustainable and resilient, and able to provide healthy and nutritious diets for all. These are complex and systemic challenges that require interdisciplinary and multicultural discussions, innovative ideas, and interconnected actions at local, national, regional and global levels.

We enjoyed presentations from 5 speakers and 2 panel discussions divided into two sessions: The morning session focused on the need for sustainable food systems, while the afternoon session featured personal, local and global success stories. The diverse actors from food science and planetary health shared their viewpoints and engaged with the audience in critical discussions.
