Occupational Health, employment, working and health conditions of Teachers in Bolivia
Three studies conducted by the University of San Francisco Xavier of Chuquisaca, in collaboration with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU, Germany), analyzed the working conditions and health of more than 1,000 teachers in urban and rural areas of Chuquisaca.
Key Findings
- Psychosocial factors: Rural teachers face higher risks, including greater psychological demands, lower institutional support, and more work–family conflicts.
- Musculoskeletal disorders: 86% reported pain in the past 12 months; the most affected areas were the neck, lower back, and knees. Rural teachers showed higher rates of disabling pain.
- Effort–reward imbalance: 33% experienced imbalance, with burnout symptoms reported by 45%, particularly in rural areas.
Conclusion
Rural teachers face more adverse working conditions, affecting both their physical and mental health. The studies highlight the need for context-specific policies, stronger institutional support, and the promotion of occupational health and teacher well-being programs.
