The German university hospitals are working together with numerous partners in the Medical Informatics Initiative to establish a nationwide infrastructure to make data from routine care usable for medical research and care. To this end, so-called data integration centers are being set up at the university medical sites. These create the technical and organizational conditions for data exchange between patient care and medical research across locations and institutions in compliance with data protection regulations.

At LMU University Hospital, the Center for Medical Data Integration and Analysis (MeDICLMU) is responsible for setting up and implementing the data integration center. The aim is to improve research opportunities and patient care through innovative IT solutions. These should enable the exchange and use of data from patient care, clinical and biomedical research across the boundaries of institutions and locations. In this way, the framework conditions are to be developed so that findings from research can reach patients directly. Data protection and data security have the highest priority.
