History
History and future
Progress in medicine has a long tradition at the LMU University Hospital. The Faculty of Medicine was founded as early as 1472, at that time still in Ingolstadt. After a stopover in Landshut from 1800 to 1826, LMU came to Munich. The first teaching hospital was the municipal hospital in Ziemssenstraße in the immediate vicinity of Sendlinger Tor. A new hospital with 200 beds, four operating theaters, an interdisciplinary emergency room and a modern obstetrics department is currently being built there. Germany's first heart transplant took place at the city center campus in 1969. And the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital with its departments of pediatrics and pediatric surgery has been in existence since 1846. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new "New Hauner" building on the Großhadern campus is planned for 2021 and represents a further step towards the construction of the new Großhadern campus.
The first milestone of the new Grosshadern Campus was already celebrated in September 2014 with the opening of the new surgery center. 32 state-of-the-art operating theaters went into operation that year. Together with the new Central Emergency Department, the Outpatient Surgery Center and the Central Sterile Supply Department, the building forms the surgical and logistical backbone of the surgical disciplines at LMU Klinikum. Other milestones include the opening of the Center for Stroke and Dementia Research and the Children's Palliative Care Unit. In Großhadern, kidney stones were shattered with shock waves for the first time in the world, regional deep hyperthermia for the treatment of cancer was significantly developed and the world's first interdisciplinary vertigo and balance center was founded.
Digitalization, big data and artificial intelligence are currently changing medicine and care considerably. Scientists at LMU University Hospital are researching the resulting opportunities for patient care, research and teaching. International collaborations ensure a worldwide network and enable an intensive exchange with experts from all disciplines. The LMU University Hospital is an internationally recognized center for clinical studies.
