This appointment marks the first professorship in Munich explicitly dedicated to clinical obstetrics and perinatal medicine - a significant step towards strengthening clinical care and research in the field of physiological and high-risk childbirth.
Prof. Dr. Sven Kehl (47) has over two decades of clinical experience, including more than ten years as senior physician and head of obstetrics at the University Hospital Erlangen. There he played a key role in shaping obstetric care, with a particular focus on high-risk pregnancies, multiple births and the promotion of natural childbirth. His scientific work is closely linked to clinical practice. He is recognized nationally and internationally as a specialist in obstetrics and perinatal medicine. He is also currently Vice President of the German Society for Perinatal Medicine (DGPM) and is involved in numerous specialist committees and guideline commissions.
"With Prof. Kehl, we are gaining a highly qualified personality who not only has extensive clinical experience, but also a deep understanding of the importance of evidence-based, structured obstetrics," says Prof. Sven Mahner, Director of the LMU Women's Hospital. "His appointment marks a milestone for obstetric care in Munich."
An experienced interdisciplinary team of gynecologists, pediatricians, nurses and midwives is available at both LMU Perinatal Center sites. Dr. Teresa Starrach (Großhadern Campus) and PD Dr. Maria Delius (City Campus) act as the central contacts for site-related medical coordination.
Prof. Kehl emphasizes: "It is a central concern of mine to represent obstetrics in all its breadth - from scientifically sound high-risk care to the best possible support for physiological birth. I look forward to further developing this field together with our dedicated team of experienced doctors, midwives and nurses."
With the new professorship, the LMU Klinikum is sending a clear signal for modern, quality-assured and interdisciplinary networked obstetrics in Munich and beyond.
