Professor Dr. Carsten Marr takes over W3 professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Hematology and Cell Therapy at LMU University Hospital

On July 1, 2025, Professor Dr. Carsten Marr took up the newly created W3 professorship for Artificial Intelligence in Cell Therapy and Haematology in Medical Clinic III at LMU Hospital. The professorship is part of a joint appointment with Helmholtz Munich, where Professor Marr established and works as founding director of the Institute of AI for Health.

Prof. Carsten Marr is considered a pioneer in the field of AI-supported methods for improving the diagnosis and treatment of haematological diseases. "I want to bring AI methods closer to the patient and transfer them to clinical application," says Prof. Marr. He also wants to develop novel cell therapy approaches together with clinical research colleagues at the LMU Clinic. The close collaboration between Helmholtz Munich and LMU Klinikum creates ideal conditions for advancing translational research," says Prof. Dr. Dr. Michael von Bergwelt, Director of Medical Clinic III.

Scientific career

After studying theoretical physics at the Technical University of Munich and the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Prof. Marr turned to theoretical biology. His doctorate, which was awarded the annual prize at the TU Darmstadt, dealt with the architecture of biological networks. Research stays have taken him to Munich, Bremen and Edinburgh, among other places. In 2013, he founded his own research group at Helmholtz Munich and later became Deputy Director of the Institute of Computational Biology.

In interdisciplinary projects, Marr developed pioneering AI methods for biomedical applications - for example to predict stem cell decisions or to detect leukemia in blood smears. He has received numerous awards for his work on single-cell analysis, including an ERC Consolidator Grant.
