"This cooperation is an important step for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in sport," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Brunner, cardiologist and Head of Sports Medicine at LMU Hospital. "Together, we can provide patients, athletes and families with the best possible support." The cardiology and sports medicine departments at LMU Hospital enjoy an international reputation in the research and treatment of heart disease.
Veit Hesse, Managing Director of the MTV, adds: "With the LMU, we have a strong partner at our side who supports our vision of health-promoting popular sport." Founded in 1879, Turn-Verein München is one of the largest and most traditional sports clubs in Munich, offering a wide range of health and rehabilitation sports.
A core project of the cooperation is the establishment of specialized cardiac sports groups at MTV München. Patients with cardiovascular diseases are cared for under the expert guidance of specially trained trainers. The LMU Clinic is responsible for the medical support and referral of patients.
The partners have also agreed a comprehensive package of measures to promote each other:
- Display of information material in the respective facilities
- Joint lecture series on heart health and sports medicine
- Coordinated public relations work across all communication channels
- Development of innovative prevention offers
- Cooperation in physiotherapy treatment
Prof. Brunner sees the cooperation as significant progress in popular sport. "Sport makes a major contribution to heart health and significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, people with pre-existing conditions such as heart failure or after a heart attack should be supervised by a doctor to ensure that their exercise is tailored to their individual needs."
