The New Hauner is growing - topping-out ceremony marks construction progress
Minister of State for Housing, Construction and Transport, Christian Bernreiter: "The Neues Haus is currently one of the most important construction projects in Bavaria: the new building stands for the aspiration to offer all children the best possible medical care. With the ultra-modern clinic building, we are creating a child-friendly environment in which the focus is not only on physical healing but also on the mental well-being of the young patients. Healing architecture is the keyword here. At the topping-out ceremony, we can draw a small interim balance: We are fully on schedule and within the estimated costs - praise and thanks to all those involved in the construction."
Minister of State for Science and the Arts, Markus Blume: "A hospital for the little ones is always a big promise. With the New Hauner, we are creating a place where state-of-the-art medicine and human warmth go hand in hand. This building stands for hope, healing and cutting-edge medicine - a place for the future that gives children a perspective, supports families and further strengthens Bavaria's leading international position in pediatric and adolescent medicine."
Head of the State Building Authority Munich 2, Thomas Jenkel: "It fills us with great pride that we, as the State Building Authority Munich 2, are able to realize the New Hauner for the LMU Clinic. This building project combines the highest functional and architectural standards with a social mission of outstanding importance: caring for the youngest patients. With the New Hauner, the State Building Authority Munich 2 is underlining its expertise in the implementation of complex future-oriented buildings. We are helping to create a modern clinic that meets the highest medical standards."
Medical Director of the LMU Klinikum, Prof. Dr. Markus M. Lerch: "We are very grateful to the Free State of Bavaria for making the construction of Europe's most modern children's hospital possible. Together with everyone who supports us, we will create a great clinic for our young patients, where parents and siblings can also contribute to their recovery."

The topping-out ceremony marks an important milestone for the New Hauner: it symbolizes the progress that has been made on the building and at the same time a look ahead. The building builds on the rich history of the children's hospital, combining state-of-the-art research, cutting-edge medical care and elements of "healing architecture", a contemporary design concept for hospital buildings. The result is a place that combines healing, care and future-oriented medicine and will shape the development of the Großhadern hospital campus. We would like to thank everyone involved - the craftsmen and women, the planners and all partners who have contributed to the success of this project with great commitment and passion.
Construction work going according to plan
The ground-breaking ceremony for the New Hauner took place in March 2023. Once the shell construction work has been completed, four upper floors and two basement floors will be visible on the campus, and the access tunnel with a length of over 320 meters to connect the supply and disposal systems is almost complete. Construction of the façade and interior work is scheduled to begin in 2026, with technical commissioning starting in mid-2028. Handover to the LMU Klinikum is planned for the turn of the year 2029/2030.

Optimal care for children of all ages
The new building with 196 beds and 1,408 rooms is home to the pediatrics and pediatric surgery clinics. The building, with a floor plan of 95 by 95 meters and a usable area of 19,200 square meters, is spatially embedded in the Grosshadern Campus, where the departments of neonatology, paediatric cardiology and paediatric palliative medicine are already located. The Neue Hauner is directly adjacent to the obstetrics department, so that children of all ages - from premature babies to young adults - can receive optimal care.
Short distances and wholesome architecture
The compact structure of the new building, designed by Munich architects Nickl & Partner, enables short distances for patients and staff. The close integration of specialist disciplines promotes rapid exchange and contributes to the best possible treatment of complex clinical pictures. Patient areas are closely linked to research, teaching and training. Modern laboratories and seminar rooms are being built on the second floor and a lecture hall on the first floor. Open spaces with play and recreation areas as well as a cafeteria with indoor and outdoor areas create a family-friendly environment. Four inner courtyards provide plenty of daylight and a positive atmosphere for children, young people and their families - a central aspect of Healing Architecture.
