Molecular Mechanism of Hypertension (AG Reincke)

Professor Martin Reincke serves as Principal Investigator (PI) and leads an internationally connected research group at the Department of Medicine IV, LMU University Hospital Munich. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms, diagnosis, and development of innovative therapies for endocrine hypertension, with particular emphasis on primary aldosteronism and Cushing’s syndrome.

Under his scientific leadership, the group integrates molecular and genetic research with clinical investigation, advanced omics technologies, and large international patient registries. A central objective is to translate fundamental discoveries into clinical applications and develop personalized diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

A major research focus is primary aldosteronism, a common yet frequently overlooked cause of arterial hypertension. As Principal Investigator, Professor Reincke initiates and leads investigator-initiated clinical trials aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. These include the BALANCE trial (start 2026 and funded by the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation), investigating whether bilateral partial adrenalectomy may provide an alternative to lifelong medical treatment in selected patients with bilateral primary aldosteronism.

Within ENDOTRAIN (started in 2026, a Horizon Europe-funded international doctoral network), Professor Reincke leads his group’s research activities and contributes to the development of innovative digital and AI-supported approaches for the diagnosis and management of primary aldosteronism.

As part of the German Research Foundation-funded Collaborative Research Centre CRC/TRR 205 “The Adrenal: Central Relay in Health and Disease” (third funding period 2025-2029) he serves as Principal Investigator of project B17, investigating molecular mechanisms underlying treatment-refractory corticotroph pituitary tumors. He also contributes to the service project S02.

As an internationally recognized physician-scientist, Professor Reincke combines scientific leadership with extensive clinical expertise. His research program aims to advance precision endocrinology through innovative translational research and investigator-initiated clinical trials, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
