SMOOTH study

Structured long-term care for patients after sepsis

[DRKS-ID: DRKS00000741]

The BMBF study developed and investigated a GP follow-up programme for patients after severe sepsis. For this purpose, the patients were actively followed up by their family doctor after discharge from hospital.

The intervention group of a total of 291 patients in 148 GP practices showed an improvement in motor function. The Smooth study (Sepsis survivors Monitoring and cOordination in OutpatienT Healthcare) drew international attention to the long-term consequences of sepsis. It showed the first approaches to improving treatment for these patients in GP practices and was published in JAMA in 2016.
