Quality management

The LMU Munich Hospital's Quality Management Unit has been supporting facilities at the hospital seeking accreditation and certification for several years. In this context, the diagnostic laboratory of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine is one of the pioneers for accreditation in accordance with the requirements of the currently valid international standard DIN EN ISO 15189 "Medical laboratories - Particular requirements for quality and competence".
Compliance with the requirements is regularly checked by internal and external audits. As confirmation of quality, the laboratory diagnostics department has been accredited by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) under the number D-ML-13295-01-00.
The satisfaction of senders, referring physicians and patients in the outpatient clinic is a major concern of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine and its diagnostic laboratory area. The quality management system introduced for this purpose is a key instrument for achieving this goal.
The test results are safeguarded by continuous internal and external quality control measures. These include regular participation in established round robin tests or, in the case of very specific analyses, cooperation with other facilities/institutes in Germany and Europe.
Tests that are not carried out in-house are outsourced to specialized facilities, reference laboratories and accredited laboratories.
The continuous further training of all employees guarantees that senders and patients have competent contacts for all questions relating to diagnostic laboratory tests.
An error and complaint management system and the newly introduced risk management system help to identify and eliminate weak points and potential risks at an early stage. Documentation is part of the central document control system, which ensures transparency and an improved flow of information.
As part of annual management reviews, the performance of the laboratory area is assessed retrospectively and new quality targets are set.
This means that all processes and examination methods in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine are carried out in accordance with the highest quality standards for those sending patients to the outpatient clinic.
