World AIDS Day 2025

News from the LIFE HIV Initiative consortium
1 December is World AIDS Day. In 2024, an estimated 40.8 million people worldwide were living with HIV, according to the World Health Organization.  Together with our partners, we are involved in HIV/AIDS research. One example is the LIFE HIV Initiative Consortium, an African-European collaborative network conducting research projects in Tanzania and Mozambique.
Role play for a training during the LIFE2Scale kick-off meeting in Zanzibar (2024): Recruiting the first "mother" for the study and counseling the "participant".

The related LIFE2Scale project, funded by European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) and German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), aims to expand and optimize HIV testing, prevention and treatment linkage strategies for mothers living with HIV and their newborns. The study completed recruitment of nearly 4,000 mother-infant pairs from primary healthcare facilities, both urban and rural. By utilizing decentralized testing strategies, the study aims to improve access equality in across different communities.

The results from this study will be combined with those from the previously completed LIFE study for both scientific publication and policy briefing to translate the research findings into real-world impact on healthcare policy and practice.

The overarching aim of the LIFE HIV Paediatric Initiative is to develop and implement novel HIV preventive strategies such as broadly neutralizing antibodies, to approach the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to eliminate paediatric HIV disease.
