Due to frequent long-distance travel and a rising number of foreign residents and migrants from tropical countries, malaria has become increasingly significant in Germany as well. With more than 1,000 reported cases per year, it is the most common potentially life-threatening imported disease.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing severe cases and deaths. This applies in Germany just as much as in malaria-endemic regions. However, diagnostic expertise on site is often insufficient or nonexistent. This can lead to significant logistical problems and delays, especially at night and on weekends.

All hospitals and laboratories involved in the treatment or diagnosis of patients with imported diseases should therefore have staff with sufficient knowledge of malaria diagnostics. This also applies to physicians and laboratory staff in malaria-endemic areas who either perform these diagnostic procedures themselves or are responsible for them.

The course offered here provides theoretical and practical knowledge on malaria. In particular, the fundamentals of malaria diagnostics are to be learned or reinforced through intensive exercises in preparing slides and extensive microscopy.

• Introduction to and overview of malaria

• Preparation and staining of smears and thick smears

• Diagnosis and differentiation of all forms of malaria

• Artifacts, sources of error, and quality control

• Other diagnostic methods (rapid tests, etc.)

• Assessment of learning outcomes

Certification

• Course certificate for successful completion

• Certification from the Academy for Infectious Diseases with 8 iCME credits

• 10 CME continuing education credits have been applied for with the Bavarian State Medical Association

Course Fee

The course fee is 300 euros and must be paid in advance via bank transfer. It includes course materials and refreshments during breaks (excluding lunch).

Registration for the event is binding!

Registration Deadline and Number of Participants

Registration must be completed at least two weeks before the course begins, provided that spots have not been filled earlier.

The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 16.

Minimum number of participants: 10.

Registration, Payment, and Cancellation Policies

The registration fee is due immediately upon registration and must be paid no later than 6 weeks before the course begins. A right to participate is granted only after receipt of the full course fee.

Changes and cancellations must be made in writing.

For cancellations up to 6 months before the event, we charge 10% of the agreed-upon participation fee.

For cancellations up to 30 days before the start of the event, we charge 20% of the participation fee.

In all other cases, your financial obligation remains in full.

Rescheduling may be possible—if feasible—for a processing fee of 10% of the participation fee.

If the rescheduling takes place less than 6 months before the originally booked course, the processing fee applies only if the vacant spot can be filled. Otherwise, the cancellation policy applies.

The organizer retains the right to allocate seats, even in the case of rescheduling.

Should the event not be held, or not be held in the form offered and booked, for reasons beyond the control of the Academy for Infectious Medicine e.V. (e.g., natural disasters, strikes, or force majeure), there is no entitlement to a refund of the (pro-rated) participation fees or to compensation for any other (financial) losses.

Registrations, however, remain valid if the event must be postponed.

The event venue is easily accessible by public transportation.

Free parking spaces are available for course participants in the courtyard of the building at Leopoldstraße 5 (entrance via Georgenstraße).
