GP 360°: Fireside chat with Prof. Bönsch - Board of MEZIS and Chief Physician of BKH Lohr
"Our clinic is independent of the pharmaceutical industry," emphasizes Professor Bönsch, Chief Physician at Lohr District Hospital. This independence is achieved by only a few institutions. For many years, Professor Bönsch has been a member of the board of the MEZIS doctors' initiative - "Mein Mein Essen zahl' ich selbst" (I pay for my own food) - which advocates a critical examination of the influence of the industry and promotes independent further and advanced training for doctors.
During the fireside chat, Prof. Bönsch shared his personal experiences of dealing with the pharmaceutical industry. He emphasized how important it is to critically question connections to the industry. He emphasized that these connections are often difficult to recognize and raised the question of whether the choice of a drug is always controlled objectively or by external influences.
The discussion showed that the influence of the pharmaceutical industry often begins with small gifts, invitations to meals or sponsored training courses. This can influence judgment and jeopardize independence.
However, it was also emphasized that not everything that comes from the pharmaceutical industry should be rejected. Research has produced many ground-breaking inventions and therapies, and a reliable supply of essential medicines is essential. Nevertheless, Professor Bönsch advises us to always remain critical and not to allow ourselves to be influenced.
We would like to thank Prof. Bönsch for the interesting lecture and the lively discussion, which opened up new perspectives.
